At this year's IDF, Intel and Yahoo showed off prototype UMPC's (some with keyboard) of the next generation of UMPC's scheduled after mid 2007.

TGDaily is speculating that this new breed could sport Intel Core CPU's (Core Solo with 1MB L2) of some flavor and thus require much less power while being more powerful. We'll see how the road map pans out and how the rest of the players respond.

mini laptops

That is the best umpc I have seen thus far. I still would rather see a pocket size version with a form factor like a Jornada 728 or Psion 5mx so it would fit in a jacket pocket yet still be large enough for a touch type keyboard. Having it that portable would create a niche for them. Otherwise you have a device you must carry in a bag etc. and in that case I would rather buy a toshiba tablet instead.

Nice find captain!

I've recently switched back to a BlackBerry and medium-sized notebook and stopped carrying my handtops (down-sizing).
It's very powerful to just make a Contact change in Outlook and watch my BB automatically get the update (no manual synching or ActiveSyncing or HotSyncing needed). Unified messaging is very simple with a BB also and I can't scoff at all day battery life with heavy use.

These are definite areas of weakness for Handtops/UMPCs of today.
