Handtops, UMPC - The future of displays... is 3D

Hey all,

Everyone complains about the screen res, and when that's too high, we complain about the lack of screen size and when that's increased, we complain about the system size... vicious cycle!

The Question to handtop designers is... how to create a satisfactorily high res display in limited physical space?

The answer? ...don't build it wider, build it DEEPER.

Imagine a miniature version of this in an orb shaped (or some other shape that is easier to carry or integrate with your clothing etc) UMPC.

The future of displays is 3 Dimensional.

Its going to be difficult to get that down to portable size. The image is inside the device.

Until that happens, I think there are two options:

small projectors ( link or link ) which are not yet here,

or head mounted displays, which are. Unfortunately, 800x600 at a reasonable(?) price ( link ) is ugly. Covert displays are too expensive and have a resolution (640x480) too small for handtops ( link ).
Hopefully this will improve.

The nice thing about these options is that they can be used together to prvide both public and private display without increasing the size of the device

Not sure how meaningful this (3D display) is. There is future, and there is near future, there is not so far future, also future future. Talking about 3D display for handtops now is almost like talking about brain-computer interface...

Well, one can dream, sure.

That display is very cool in its current form, but I fail to see how it would be useful for a UMPC. The display is not "3D", it's just a 2D plane viewable from 360 degrees, so it's not going to give you any more viewable area than a normal screen would.

It would make far more sense on a full size laptop to me, since it would be a very nice collaboration tool for small conferences.
