*store*, I used:
- Cooledit Pro to record (44.1 KHz 16-bit mono) on the OQO
- Audacity (open source) to edit and later resample (to 22 KHz) on the Mac
- Lame (open source) to convert to MP3 (at 32 kbps) on the Mac
I could have used Audacity to record on the OQO but I like Cooledit Pro because I have been using it for years... If you're interested I could also make a high quality VBR MP3 (at 44.1 KHz)!

Great stuff, thanks tnkgrl. altho I do wish the rest fo the team spoke a bit more. lol.
so it'd be a VIA chipped, active touch screen, possible 3G build-in model 02 at the same price point?

*jo2k* I don't know... From what Jory said I think you're probably right! I also found it interesting that he stressed how much R&D went into the Model 01/01+ and that leads me to believe that future models will use a similar form factor and leverage that R&D.

tnkgrl just wanted to say thank you for the podcast. Perked me up some at work.
Not to get off point or anything but you have an interesting accent. Are you from up north? (I was suspecting another country but thought I woudl start small)
Back on point. I found Jory's perspective on competition interesting, and also am glad he see themselves as leading the pack.
P.s.: I also wanted to comment on how well you tastefully fished for info.

So that you know, when asked in the beginning Jory commented that "we don't talk about future products."
Very well spoken interview all the way around, tnkgrl and Jory.
There are no model 02 spoilers here.
On a side note, I think OQO should name it something funny or at least have a community naming contest for the 02. I'm thinking OQO model 02 Electric Boogaloo, but that's just me.
Interview Highlights:
- Jory has no title now since there's a new CEO.
- OQO knows their markets are the enterprise and government (not consumer) where users want to run XP on a pocketable computer.
- OQO is user focused, so OQO is listening to users' feedback and incorporating changes so the model 01+ addressed model 01 concerns about lack of USB 2.0, digitizer issues, more RAM needs, Wifi reception issues, and need for more battery life.
*Note: We need to voice our needs as a group.
- Integration of a digital wireless solution in future models, so no need for a 2 device solution (cell with BT and OQO BT). A messaging device and a small phone will still be needed (similar to the BlackBerry and cell phone model), but the next OQO will have cellular functionality but Jory believes that people will carry a small cell along with a cellular-enabled OQO.
- Phone versus BlackBerry versus Treo versus Nokia 770 comments:
.The Nokia 770 and UMPC products are not significant to OQO in the short-to-medium term since it is targeted at the "extremely low price point", companion device for the consumer-based lifestyle market.
.He took a quick cut at the UMPC market for not delivering to the low cost product.
.He commented that the Nokia 770 is a successful product for their market.
.He reconfirmed that a "pocketable form" computer is what OQO is going for.
- OQO and the UMPC market
.In 2002, OQO showed Microsoft’s Jim Allchin the 01 prototype.
.Microsoft wanted to make these devices for a while, but components like the Intel CPU's claims to the low power and MS needing to push the hw vendors was a big struggle at that time.
.Jory predicted that it will take 1-2 years until an OQO-sized UMPC based on Intel CPU appears.
.The OQO concept is about a change in the form factor and use models. There are compromises in shrinking the computer technology.
.Jory is not hung up on being a pioneer in this space (Good! Jory sounds pretty level-headed and humble... I like that) and he wants to remain a leader in this space, a full-powered computer in your pocket.
-On an OQO product with no XP. There are no restrictions or relationships with Microsoft that require XP on the OQO, so the barrier is providing support for Linux on the OQO. OQO is not clear how big the market is for a Linux supported OQO or selling an OQO with no operating system (skirted this one...why not?). Microsoft has a huge support system for OQO, while Linux does not have this same support. OQO has talked to a few Linux service organizations, but nothing has come out of this yet.
.Jory is not concerned with DualCor and Averatec, but is concerned with efforts from Sony and Samsung in this same space because of their innovation and very deep pockets. Not concerned with the Averatec OQO/SideKick prototype (yet).
.Jory sees HTC as a competitor in the 3G/handtop space, although HTC is WM focused device.
.OQO has been aware of DualCor for a while since DualCor has been shopping their technology on the street for a while.
-OQO's company size is doubling in the next 6-12 months.
- NO NO NO Jory has mixed feelings on Active versus Passive digitizers. Come one guy. I have the 5" Sony U passive handtop and the 5" OQO active handtop and the PASSIVE digitizer is the better way to go. Not only is the 5" passive Gunze display resolution at 800x600, you actually can use it while on the go and the Tablet Input Panel (TIP) in XP Tablet can take up 4 lines on the 800x600 resolution screen. Additionally, I know Sony only charges $400 for a full replacement on the screen and labor is $250, so the Gunze digitizer is relatively inexpensive. I almost never use the OQO active digitizer. Remember that this is a mobile device.
.OQO's approach has been to put as much of the functionality of a regular PC into software that runs on a sub-processor (running on standard silicon that uses software to replace hardware functionality) and not building a unique ASIC or reusing an existing hardware layout (like Sony).
.OQO has invested in this philosophy over the past 5 years and does not believe that anyone else has done this, including Sony and DualCor. This is the OQO competitive advantage...until the UMPC reference design shrinks everything down to OQO size. SO keep innovating folks!
-Jory did send Steve Jobs a note after OQO launched, but never got a reply.
-OS X and SSE2 on the OQO was somewhat discussed, but Windows is king. The comments sounded like the Linux answer in that there doesn't seem to be a big enough business case for it.
-Jory reads Handtops.com. (Welcome)
-Jay, the new OQO CEO, hears about issues raised here.
*Note, please keep feedback going here for the model 02 EB.
tnkgrl,
Did they offer you a job yet? I think you represent many types of users.
FWIW, I think that a subset of your needs represent me.
Think about it.

Thanks tnkgrl, well done. My favorite part was your question about the back-lit keyboard.
