READ about the MINI PCI EXPRESS card being used in the OQO 02
If that is the interface for the WWAN card in the OQO 02 then you can change it out with another card from the same manufacturer for there various HSDPA cards which appear to be the same form factor and voltage! While I am sure one would void the warranty, some might consider this a viable option to get what they want from their OQO 02. This is what I am considering doing plus changing the Hard Drive to the new 64GB solid state drive from Seagate (FASTER than the old 32GB solid state drives)

I titled a topic wrong earlier so I am correcting with this new one.

Even if these modules fit physically and work electrically, you still need a way to connect the SIM card to the module, not to mention drivers for the module

Drivers provided by Novatel Wireless (manufacturer).... Sim card connectivity could be figured out....Thank GOD thoughs sim cards are small as some very small leads could be easily be added and the sim card could probably be mounted on or near the MINI PCI CARD.

Not saying it would be easy, but I could do it and I'm pretty sure TNKGRL has the skills too. Also a company like buildyourumpc.com could do it too. (They are already talking about replacing HDD with solid state in OQOs)

You're right about the drivers... As for the SIM card, you'd need a SIM card holder - there's already room for one on the back of the computer if you look at the FCC documents and there's even a matching indent on the back of the battery - link

I'd do it for someone if they'd be willing to void their warranty - I'm not going to do it to mine

Can this formfactor be plugged directly into a laptop that supports this type of card ? If so then it should have the SIM slot also on the device itself.

So is it Micro PCI Express or Mini PCI Express?

What about antennae? EVDO is 1900/800(850) MHz. HSDPA adds up to 3 additional frequencies depending on the card used: 1800/900/(2100) MHz - without properly tuned antennae, reception will suffer (at least when travelling abroad).

Does the 02 without built in EVDO come with the slide out antenna ?

*kyone*, yes it does, in addition to internal antennae, I think...

SIM card holders - link

There's also a Half Mini PCI Express size - link - I have a feeling that's what OQO is using, as Mini PCI Express is pretty large!

Sorry if I come into this discussion as clueless. I'm going to void my warranty anyway by adding a 32gb ssd drive to the oqo as soon as it arrives. I would prefer HSDPA over EVDO simply because I would like to pull the sim card out of the device and use the data sim card for a phone and/or pc card for laptop. Is this possible?

I still have that Falcom GSM cingular sim device that I modified for the 01...never really used it and doubt I will use it...but I would much rather have HSDPA data than EVDO simply because it is more portable, i.e. pulling the SIM card from device to device.

as a reply to TNKGRLs statement: "There's also a Half Mini PCI Express size - link - I have a feeling that's what OQO is using, as Mini PCI Express is pretty large!"

the article I linked to in the beginning (ie. link ) specifically says the OQO is using model Expedite® EV620 PCI Express Mini Card Embedded Module

Does the 02 without built in EVDO come with the slide out antenna ?

I read somewhere that models without an EVDO module DO NOT come with an external / retracting antenna. I think it was on OQO support / FAQ section..... please call OQO and find out for yourself if you do not find it on their site. I will try to put link here if I find it soon.

If you look at the STARTUP GUIDE (PDF document) at the OQO web site in their support section the STARTUP GUIDE shows the antenna as "OPTIONAL" and "ONLY ON WWAN" models.

*1trillion", the article is speculating: "the WWAN chosen by OQO LOOKS A WHOLE LOT like Novatel Wireless’ EV-DO Expedite EV620 PCI Express mini card" [Emphasis mine].

hhmm i'm in Australia... ;)

Actually if my memory serves me correctly does it talk about the antenna not being included in the non EVDO version in the user manual ?

But it is my understanding that it is not included in the non EVDO version. Someone who has one can confirm...

Edit: yes 1trillion, correct...
