What do you use your BB for mainly?

How about this

Not impressive, you can do essentially the same thing with a blue tooth enabled phone and laptop already.

*2disbetter*, yes but tethering a phone via Bluetooth is a lot more trivial than turning your a phone into an EDGE to WiFi bridge via SOCKS... To my knowledge, it's a first for a phone!

The fact that this works on the iPhone with just SSH access (not special software by any means, other than the "jailbreak" hack required to install SSH) shows the power of having a device that is unix-based (ie. built-in routing).

tnkgrl,

Do you know if the iPhone does OTA updates?

*ecsk2*, the iPhone's software can be updated at anytime by Apple via iTunes syncing (just like the iPod).

Yes I know that but I was thinking if it can get an OTA update too, meaning could Apple stop all this "fun" with an OTA so to speak "overnight" if they chose to?

*ecsk2*, I don't think the iPhone supports software updates via the mobile network.

Oh? Well good for hackers But I'm suprised my "for teenagers desgined" phone does, and so has the previous 2 generations of it.

*ecsk2*, I think the idea is that you'll use your computer running iTunes to sync/charge your iPhone every other day or so.

I'm not following, OTA is about a more modern solution, that is both more convinient for consumer and product "owner/devloper" (read: Apple in this case) as well as safer, if/when there is a safety issue in the OS etc, obviously as I said not so good for hackers

I just can't say enough good things about the iphone. I'd like to see the iphone keyboard application in an OQO...it'd save my hands from getting old that's for sure.

Would you also want to see an OQO without the highlight and/or copy and paste feature removed?

The iPhone is a nice new "move" in the mobile communication world but it really has little to do with so called smartphones, its more an iPod video with a phone and internet access.

I didn't say get rid of the mouse, just the keyboard.

I disagree with you...I've used dozens of pricey "smartphones & WM5" devices...they are all horrible devices in my experience. Speaking about WM5 devices...anybody want a Verizon Q? I used it for about four months and canceled both of my 2 year contracts with Verizon. I also have a VK2020 RED (which is very rare) which I will be selling, it's a nice teeny tiny phone...the main flaw is the signal reception is tuned to Asia/Europe...while it has all quad GSM bands, it lacks North America optimization so it works pretty well but not like most phones.

I rarely use the iPod feature on the iPhone. I bought one album and one other song on iTunes for the phone, but that is a nice feature. Internet access is mediocre, yet the Safari browser is out of this world. I won't be using the Internet a lot until the HSDPA one comes out and hopefully it'll support Java and Flash by then.

The phone does work great though, but it's all the other features that make it so outstanding. I love the keyboard...never ever thought I'd like a keyboardless keyboard. And I'm also not an Apple fan...only other product I bought was the first generation iPod. iPod isn't that important to me...clearly I would have bought another iPod if it were.

Other nice feature is I can't seem to scratch it...I carry it everywhere with me and it still looks new, which is great because I hate cases that make a device less mobile/usable.

There are flaws with the iPhone no doubt, but I wouldn't replace this iPhone with any other phone. If the iPhone was twice the $$$$, I would still buy it....I like it that much. Clearly if Apple came out with a iUMPC with a similar approach using SSD, they'd have a product worth its weight in gold IMO.

Although, I suspect I might be better off with a HSDPA pda device. I haven't tried WM6 yet. I need something to run SQL and have a real web browser like IE7/Firefox and broadband internet and long battery life. I'm not sure my SQL program will run on SQL compact, and if it doesn't then I most likely will have to resort to 2 hour battery life/heat/fan/pocket issues of the oqo.

I really like this Nokia E90, but I would need SQL compact on it and it only works with windows mobile. Otherwise, it looks like a nice phone. Supposedly SQL will work with Symbian, but sounds like it could be a headache. dunno

WM6 has both .NET Compact Framework 2.0 AND SQL 2005 Compact Edition in ROM....maybe I should just get a pda to replace the oqo and iphone and have one device. It's like both devices are amazing, yet lack what I ultimately need. Together they fill that gap, but it would be nice to have a smaller all-in-one device.
