jkkmobile,

I liked your review. Did you have to reinstall OpenOffice after installing XP Pro? Did you install Explorer7? Did you have to install a new anti virus, or did the one on the Asus stay put? What about virus protection for e-mail? I am so lost in this matter.

I bought my Eee PC on newegg. I like it, but now I'm really thinking that I need to upgrade to XP Pro. I am not very computer savvy and I'm quite nervous about doing it.

A couple of questions:

If I download XP, will it wipe out all of the games Asus had installed, the e-mail, anti virus, and Open Office?
Will I be able to download Explorer 7?

I am registered at the EeePC User forum, but they still haven't e-mailed me my password to be able to post at that forum.

Thanks!

Kirby"

A) You can't "download XP" as such well except for pirate sites and such...
B) Yes it will remove the Linux (heh I almost typed Lexus! ) it wouldn't remove it but would it fit without deleting?
C) You can download IE7 yes

Doesn't the EEE come with any restore CD or anything?

Looks like you can get your EEE stuff here

Thank you, ecsk2. I mistyped. I shouldn't have said download XP. I'm still learning the lingo. I read the manual over the weekend and I realize I have to buy XP Pro with SP2 on it. The Asus did come with a service disk for installing the XP drivers and for recovery.

Yet, another question. What do I do about anti virus for my e-mail and for surfing the web? Any suggestions for the Eee PC if I install XP?

Thank you.

what have you been using so far when it comes to antivirus? You'll maybe get as may suggestions as ppl you ask but I used to like AVG and mailwasher.net yes checking and deleting mainly manually.

Thank you, ecsk2. The Eee PC 8G came with anti virus on it. I will check around unless someone else here might have another suggestion too for the Eee PC.

Thank you!

Mac OS x and Wifi working and 802.11n at that!!

Me too thats why I installed crossover!
There's free "wine" too but I'm still learning linux so..

Because it's the Windows-less enviroment I like!

To be honest and it plays some of the windows media player streams (both audio and video) that I like to listen to/watch from overseas (that would be from your (jkkmobile) neck of the woods ) without any added extras unlike our Macs, the Firefox has an Mplayer plugin that runs most every Windows Media stream I've tried and flawlessly unlike the flip4mac stuff for quicktime.

No I'm not that fond of WMedia streams but the ones I use are not available in any other format.

Also with the crossover (I'm not all too fond of the DOS type/level of doing things as you need to do in Linux with installing some of these prgs so I chose crossover for $39.99 doing a trial run for now) so far it has installed everything I want/need and it's just great. Now from a financial/legal perspective since you do NOT need a WIN CD (hence no license) with the crossover I think you're saving both memory and $$$

sorry again : link
