UMPC, Handtop or micro sub-notebook?

When is a hand top computer a Handtop, when is it a UMPC, and when is it a micro sub-notebook?

The definition that follows of the UMPC is from various sources including Microsoft, but the definitions used here for Handtops and micro sub-notebooks are my own, based on what seems to be a general consensus. If I got them wrong, my apologies in advance.

Microsoft defined the UMPC more or less as follows:

"A lightweight, small tablet PC with an on-screen keyboard. Weighing two pounds

Model 02 finally arrived

Well,
I got the notice earlier this week that my 02 would ship on Wednesday and get to my house on Friday. It left Singapore as scheduled. I was a little worried that it might get tied up at the Memphis location in the "international" destination holding area. It spent all of 1hour there and FEDEX actually tried to deliver it on Thursday! I picked it up Thursday night from my local FEDEX location and I was happy and on my way.

I had been trying to contact the OQO wireless s

Unboxing the Asus 701 (Eee)

W-Eee :) I'm now officially one of the coolest kids on the block! I'm typing this post on my Asus 701 (Eee)...

I've quietly been keeping an eye on the Eee since it was announced a few months ago. After all, who's not interested in a $399 ultra-portable sub-notebook?

Not to mention, it's a particularly interesting device if, like me, you're a blogger on-the-go, especially with the built-in webcam.

After using it for less than 24 hours I'm pretty impressed, and so are others, apparently. Th

02 Dead Keyboard

This morning I popped my 02 out of it's docking cradle, played with it for a few moments, then the keyboard went dead. Totally DEAD. The track stick still moves the cursor, but no keypress registers, nor do the lights light up on Fn, CTL, ALT or SHIFT. Teck support had me run through a few things, but then issued an RMA for repair. External keyboard still works.

Anyone else have this problem?

Intel's vision of future UMPC's

This is a really interesting, and timely addition to the "Handtops as a Consumer Electronic Device" idea. http://www.handtops.com/blog/170/0/Handtops_as_consumer_electronics.html Here we have a bunch of wearable and compact devices that are a bit outside the box. http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/video-intel-future-of-umpcs

It is nice to see a company like Intel doing some free thinking, and bodes well for the future of UMPC's in general.

UMPC newspaper article

There's an interesting, but short, article in this morning's "Tech Section" of the San Jose Mercury News. The article is about UMPC's and mentions the FlipStart, Samsung Q2, Sony & OQO. Not a very enlightening article for those of us that are regular forum readers/upmc owners. But, at least it's putting out some info for the general public.

One of the persons interviewed stated that the small keyboards can actually cause "injuries!" Umm, you FlipStart owne

Where are all the OQO Model 01/+ users?

The forums are all about the 02 now. And the blogs have been about the 02 too! So where have all the 01 users gone? I still prefer the 01 over the 02. Anybody done any mods, anything? 01 users speak up!

Performance Capped

The dust is settling, and the horizon is again in view, but the short term outlook is not as pretty as might have been expected some six months ago. In the short term at least, until Intel releases Menlow with the Silverthorne CPU, we can expect the majority of Handtop and UMPC devices to be constrained to an extent with low performance CPU's.

While there are some notable exceptions to the low powered CPU rule, the Sony UX at present being the most outstanding of these, the writing was on th

I stopped obsessing

Thanks to my faceless friends here I stopped obsessing and ordered my OQO-2 today. I'm sure I'll find something else to obsess about soon enough, but for now...

I ordered Best with Vista Business with Verizon (I think Verizon has better coverage in my area.)
I went with Vista for the supposed better security and possible benefits from features like SmartFetch, ReadyBoost. I also did not relish the thought of deciding to upgrade to Vista with XP installed. OS upgrades are not always a fun

Thanks to all of you for the great FlipStart questions. Rather than make it a one time thing, I'll be taking follow-up questions which we can hopefully get answered as well.

Q: Who are you targeting with the E-1001S?

Shipping delays

Shipping delays - the bane of the computer industry.

As a software developer, I know all about shipping delays, and the almost super human effort that goes into trying to avoid them, to no avail. Murphy is alive and well and visits almost daily.

Although not alone in suffering from this problem, the computer industry tends to be beset by it more often than most, and more often than not, for that matter.

Shipping delays can be caused by any number of factors, ranging from natural disast

OQO usage question

Question for current OQO users: I can see thumb typing or tablet style use when standing or sitting not at a table. I am wondering about the experience of using the OQO if you are seated at a table or desk. Is the fixed & flat position of the screen uncomfortable in that type of setting? It would seem setting it down on a surface is not a practical way to use it. Anyone care to comment?
